The sharp pain behind the knee can be of various reasons. It can be due to an injury like calf muscle tear or it can be due to tendonitis of the hamstring muscles seen in runners. It can also be due to tendonitis of the gastrocnemius muscle, mainly seen in cyclists. It can also be due to bakers cysts or arthritis in the knee joint. Sometimes the pain in the back of the knee can be due to tear of the meniscus. It can be a degenerative tear or it could be a traumatic tear of the meniscus. Sometimes a pain in the back of the knee can be due to a deep vein thrombosis, which means blood clot formation in the popliteal veins. The treatment of the pain depends on the cause if it is a calf muscles injury, then few days of rest, icing and anti-inflammatory medicines will help. If it is a tendonitis if the gastrocnemius or the hamstring muscles, then pain relieving medicine like the non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and icing will help. If it is a bakers cyst, which is basically fluid collection in the back of the knee, it can be helped initially by non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and sometimes aspiration may be required and in worse cases surgery may be required to excise the cyst may be required if the tear of a posterior horn of the meniscus, again arthroscopy can help, if it is DVT, the medical line of management with anticoagulant medication will help.

Dr. Alfred Bonati discusses Fibromyalgia 8/09/2023 | Bonati Spine Institute

back and hip No Comments »

Dr. Alfred Bonati discusses Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a pain-related disorder that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain that can impact daily activities. This central nervous system condition affects more than 10 million Americans, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association.

Women are diagnosed with fibromyalgia more frequently than men; an estimated 6 to 10 percent of women have the condition. Less than 1 percent of men in America also suffer from fibromyalgia. Though mostly diagnosed in adults, fibromyalgia also affects children and teens. Between 1 and 7 percent of children are believed to have the condition.

Fibromyalgia pain can ebb and flow, which means some days are worse than others. Fibromyalgia pain relief can be difficult to find, but there are many treatment options that can help you minimize your discomfort.

The most prominent sign of fibromyalgia is chronic pain. In the 20th century, fibromyalgia was identified by pain in all 4 quadrants of the body for a duration of 3 months. Some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

Pain
Fatigue
Headaches
Difficulty sleeping
Anxiety
“Fibro fog”/cognitive difficulties
Irritable bowel syndrome
Depression
Women may also suffer more painful menstrual cramps. Fibromyalgia pain is widespread and often felt in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. It can be a dull, sharp, throbbing or aching pain.

Treatment for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia treatment options specifically focus on the use of pain relievers, antidepressants and other medications.

Over-the-counter pain relievers may be used to dull the pain some of the time; however, narcotics are not advised as a fibromyalgia treatment option.

Other medications, such as antidepressants, may also be used to treat the anxiety or depression that accompanies fibromyalgia.

When the extensive pain a person is feeling is caused by spinal cord compression, cervical spine surgery could provide some fibromyalgia pain relief. According to the National Fibromyalgia Research Association, 42 out of 45 people with fibromyalgia also exhibited signs of spinal cord compression.

We advocate patients suffering from debilitating chronic pain to contact us for an MRI review or to discuss symptoms with a spine surgeon to discover if the Bonati Spine Procedures could be a fibromyalgia treatment option.

Chronic Low Back Pain

Education video on Chronic Low Back Pain by Dr. Gary Simonds, former Chief of Neurosurgery at Carilion Clinic.
Video Rating: / 5

“I’d been dealing with intense chronic back pain for 25 years and was at the end of my rope. Trips to the ED, physical therapy and consultations with orthopaedic and neurosurgeons hadn’t helped. I was advised to see surgeons in Boston or at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Hanover. I chose Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Dr. Lollis told me that surgery wouldn’t help me but encouraged me to try Functional Restoration Program. The three week program was really hard in the beginning; I actually thought about leaving. I love exercise but was afraid of what they were having us do. But the staff found a way to get us moving. By the second week I was in a nice rhythm and the class discussions during the third week helped us think through how we’d keep our program going at home. It was wonderful to work through the program with other people. Doing therapy on my own had been very isolating and never really clicked for me. And everyone on the program staff was so dedicated. Every day was filled with activities, comments, and energy that you don’t find very often anywhere. Now, one year out, I’m back to working 30 — 40 hours a week in the heating and air conditioning business. I’ve gone on back to back 8 — 12 mile hikes and took an 8 hour kayaking trip.”
