The lower back comprises the lumbar spine, which is formed by vertebral bones, intervertebral discs, nerves, muscles, ligaments, and blood vessels. The spinal cord ends at the top of the lumbar spine, and the remaining nerve roots, called the cauda equina, descend down the remainder of the spinal canal.

Dr. Alfred Bonati discusses Fibromyalgia 8/09/2023 | Bonati Spine Institute

Dr. Alfred Bonati discusses Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a pain-related disorder that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain that can impact daily activities. This central nervous system condition affects more than 10 million Americans, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association.

Women are diagnosed with fibromyalgia more frequently than men; an estimated 6 to 10 percent of women have the condition. Less than 1 percent of men in America also suffer from fibromyalgia. Though mostly diagnosed in adults, fibromyalgia also affects children and teens. Between 1 and 7 percent of children are believed to have the condition.

Fibromyalgia pain can ebb and flow, which means some days are worse than others. Fibromyalgia pain relief can be difficult to find, but there are many treatment options that can help you minimize your discomfort.

The most prominent sign of fibromyalgia is chronic pain. In the 20th century, fibromyalgia was identified by pain in all 4 quadrants of the body for a duration of 3 months. Some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

Pain
Fatigue
Headaches
Difficulty sleeping
Anxiety
β€œFibro fog”/cognitive difficulties
Irritable bowel syndrome
Depression
Women may also suffer more painful menstrual cramps. Fibromyalgia pain is widespread and often felt in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. It can be a dull, sharp, throbbing or aching pain.

Treatment for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia treatment options specifically focus on the use of pain relievers, antidepressants and other medications.

Over-the-counter pain relievers may be used to dull the pain some of the time; however, narcotics are not advised as a fibromyalgia treatment option.

Other medications, such as antidepressants, may also be used to treat the anxiety or depression that accompanies fibromyalgia.

When the extensive pain a person is feeling is caused by spinal cord compression, cervical spine surgery could provide some fibromyalgia pain relief. According to the National Fibromyalgia Research Association, 42 out of 45 people with fibromyalgia also exhibited signs of spinal cord compression.

We advocate patients suffering from debilitating chronic pain to contact us for an MRI review or to discuss symptoms with a spine surgeon to discover if the Bonati Spine Procedures could be a fibromyalgia treatment option.

Many people struggle with knee pain but health experts say that pain you’re having may actually be caused by a back problem.

Neal Trottier, a physical therapist with Lee Memorial Health System, says aches and sharp knee pains can be a symptom of a back problem. β€œA lot of patients will say I don’t have a back problem. I didn’t even have any back pain.”

In many cases, Trottier says, patients have a pinched nerve in the lower back causing pain in their knees. β€œIt’s because the nervous system and the nerves actually travel down to your legs, especially coming from the low back. If there’s a nerve that’s compressed you may not feel the back pain, you may not feel the pain where the actual problem is. A lot of times you will feel it extend down the leg.”

If the patient has both knee and back pain, Trottier says the treatment will focus on strengthening the patient’s posture, flexibility, and core. β€œFor back pain in general we tend to work a lot on core strength. Your core muscles, not only your abdominals but your hip muscles, your back muscles, they’re very important to strengthen and support the spine,” said Trottier.

Physical therapy may also address the knee pain with light exercises. β€œSitting and standing out of a chair, doing some light mini squats, and things where you’re putting weight through your joints,” said Trottier.

Other activities like water aerobics and walking on soft surfaces can also help manage the pain. β€œUsually if it’s painful it’s probably not the right thing to do. It’s your body’s way of telling you it’s time to stop,” said Trottier. He says other ways to help with the pain are stretching, over the counter pain relief, and resting. Over time the pain typically gets better.
